Cong-Fusion

Cong-Fusion are a group of musicians who perform original tunes written and composed by Ryan McCaffrey. He began writing the music in 2006 while studying at what is now known as the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. He performed these tunes at La Raza in Cambridge and, as a direct result from one of these first performances, Ryan was asked to arrange his tunes for NYJO. Since then, they have performed in many formats and with a variety of different members. While living in London the Ryan McCaffrey Sessions jam session was born, which featured musicians including established names from the UK jazz scene.

FAQ

What will it look like?+

Last year, we were the first ever event to use Vicky Park's bandstand for Live Music and that legacy will live on. Our main stage this year is even bigger too to accommodate the ever-growing (but legislatively limited) capacity of 4000 people. We fit festival feel in Victoria Park too, so even though our locally-loved vendors make the site look pretty, you can pull up a picnic blanket where you like and relax.

What can my ears expect?+

We all know about the 14 Live Acts across a wide variety of genres... right? Well, the first act, a professional jazz-funk ensemble, will already be groovin' when you arrive at 11:00. From there, you'll be taken on a journey through genres such as Reggae, Indie, RnB, and a lot more Jazz and Funk. No cover bands either, get ready for a whole day of some of the best original music from all over the UK.

2 stages?+

While our huge Main Stage is where you'll find hour-long sets of Big-Band Funk, backing singers, and horn sections, the Bandstand offers something different. With only 20 minutes between Main Stage shows, our Bandstand Artists have been carefully selected to interest the ears, some setting the mood with cool jazz, others providing displays of musically multicultural virtuosity. Think an hour of WOW and 20 minutes of "hmm" (but in a good way), non-stop from 11:00 till 22:00.

Audience+

When I asked my family if they're coming to SOF, some of them said "I'm not sure it's for me". I laughed before I realised they were serious. I said "we've got everything from Art Exhibitions to First-Aid Training stands, Classical piano arrangements to Leicester's up-and-coming neo-soul artists, vegan cakes and desserts to an in-house menu designed by a Michelin-trained chef... The question isn't 'is it for me?', but 'am I available?".

Ticket price+

When we started Summer of Funk, we knew we wanted to bring people together in the name of original live music. We know most people don't go to gigs because it's too pricey so here are some things we've taken things like food and drink into our own hands!

As a Michelin-trained chef, I have created a tantalizing menu which can be done affordably, like Gochujang Fried Chicken and Fries for only £5.50!

Plus, you've all heard about our commitment to £3 Drinks - Pints, Spirits, Wine, all £3! (and soft drinks only £1).

We're able to do this because of the generosity of the people around us so, to support them (and get your all-access pass to 14 HOURS of non-stop live original music), buy your tickets now.

Don't wait until they're gone!

Surprises+

Full disclosure, this event is being run entirely by 2 19-year-olds and, by the time we're done dealing with the council and doing paperwork, there isn't much time for advertising. This is about to change. Over the next few days, we'll be announcing some pretty major shenanigans to take place on the day (like a full hog-roast)!
